"The Nicht's the Nicht!" is a one act opera, with libretto by Ronald Armstrong, and music by Alan Craig.
It tells the true story of an ancient feud between the Scottish clans MacNab and MacNeish. Against the backdrop of Perthshire's awesome mountains and lochs, their mutual animosity led to a 17th century tragedy.
The tale is recounted by a mysterious blind seanachaidh (storyteller), assisted by a band of Wee Folk (the invisible little people of Scottish myth and folklore). Their account is sung through and accompanied by a chamber orchestra.
The opera is both universally accessible and artistically substantial. It is a romantic miniature that has delighted opera-philes and -phobes alike. Its honest humanitarian premise is as topical today as ever.
