An Seanachaidh
Seanachaidh; pron. shan-ah-kee n. (Gaelic): story-teller, bard, clan historian and geneologist.
The Seanachaidh is the keeper of a clan's oral history, traditions and laws. His (or her) duties are to keep the lineage and history of their own clan and those of the neighbouring clans.
The story of the opera, "The Nicht's the Nicht!", is told by a mysterious blind seanachaidh, with the help of some mischievous Wee Folk.
His story is told in song (both solo and in concert with others) - as was often the case in the oral tradition of the Scottish Highlands.
