The "Wee Folk" are mischievous, invisible faeries who live, unseen, in the hills, forests & glens of Scotland.
The Wee Folk are often said to do good deeds or, more often, to repay kindnesses done to them.
However, they are mischievous by nature and will wreak revenge on anyone foolish enough to cut down a hawthorn tree
or "faery thorn".
As well as mischief, the Wee Folk enjoy music and jigs, and happily join with the Seanachaidh in his story-telling.
Some ancient Highland families still hold artifacts said to have been taken from the Wee Folk, including the famous "Faerie Flag" at Dunvegan Castle in Skye. The Flag reputedly brought victory to the Clan in battle.
The Wee Folk are not adverse to warfare themselves, and have affected the outcome of many famous battles. In the opera, "The Nicht's the Nicht!", the Wee Folk intervene in the real-life battle between the Clans MacNeish and MacNab, leading to a surprising outcome.
